- Hank Aaron was 16 when he first began
- playing organized baseball, with the
- semi-pro Black Bears, in his hometown
- of Mobile. He also played halfback for
- his high school football team.
-
- For several years, Hank, a right-handed
- batter, hit cross-handed (he put his left
- hand on top of his right hand when he
- gripped the bat). He got away with this
- "wrong" hitting style only because his
- wrists were so strong. But he soon
- realized how much more power he
- could get if he gripped the bat "correctly."
